The financial planning process

When you come to us for expert financial advice, you can expect a simple, logical process that is designed to offer unwavering support and meet your every need. Here’s how it works:

1. Client Engagement

Your financial advisor will find out what you want and gain an understanding of your hopes, goals and fears. This first step is all about you, not your money.

2. Discovery

We’ll then establish your current financial position. This will include working out your assets and liabilities, income and expenses.

3. Analysis & Research

At this stage, your financial advisor will assess all the information they’ve gathered and figure out what is working and what can be improved.

4. Presentation

We’ll deliver a detailed written report, including justifications for the recommendations we have made. You’ll then agree with your financial planner on how you wish to move forward.

5. Implementation

Your advisor will take on the responsibility of putting any changes into action.

6. Review

The process doesn’t stop at implementation. Your financial advisor will reassess your plan at least once a year to make sure it continues to work for you.

Why choose us for financial planning?

  • We see the real you

One size does not fit all when it comes to looking after your finances. We believe that starting each relationship with a blank piece of paper and no products to sell is the best way to get to know you.

  • We’ll stay with you

Creating and implementing your plan is just the start of our relationship with you. As we get to know you and your needs as a family, your financial advisor will regularly review your life goals. So, if your circumstances change over time we make sure your plan will always keep pace.

  • We know what’s important

Money matters but life matters more. When clients stop thinking about money and focus on what they can do in life, we know we're doing a good job.

  • We’re local

Even in our global, digital world, you can’t beat local, convenient and personal. With our network of offices across the UK, we have dedicated and experienced teams near you who know you and your area. We can visit you whenever you need us, supporting you with friendly, expert financial advice.

  • We’re open and honest

We believe strongly in disclosure. We’ll always be clear with you about the cost of financial advice – both initially and ongoing – as well as associated costs such as product fees or transactional charges. We don’t charge for an initial meeting, so you can relax and talk to us openly, without the fear of receiving an unexpected bill.

  • You can count on us

We're a brand with an impeccable reputation. We’re one of the very few banks to come through the financial crisis with its reputation intact, we’ve been operating for almost 200 years and all of our financial planners are highly qualified experts in their field.

Financial planning - frequently asked questions

We know how important your money is to you, and how it can shape your future as well as that of your loved ones. We also understand that seeking professional financial advice is a big step – and one that should be taken carefully. With that in mind, we’ve provided answers to some key questions regarding our financial planning services.

  • How much does financial advice cost?

We will usually cover the cost of our first meeting, so you won’t have to worry about being stung with an unexpected bill after that first chat. From there, we will typically charge an upfront fee for providing an analysis of your finances and the recommendations we make off the back of that. If you wish to retain us as your financial planner, we will charge an ongoing fee for those services.

You can find more information on the cost of our services on page 24 of our financial planning explained document.

  • How much do I need to invest?

A typical Investec client tends to have more than £250,000 to invest or plan their financial future with, including any pensions they may already have.

  • Where else can I get financial advice?

It’s possible to tackle elements of financial planning without the help of a professional. For example, the likes of Money Helper and Citizens Advice offer a wealth of useful resources that may provide some of the basic information you need to make decisions.

However, it can be a complex task to take on alone. That’s where the services of a professional, personal financial advisor can prove invaluable. They can create a flexible, tailored plan that suits your needs perfectly, while they’ll be in a position to make adaptations to suit any changes in your circumstances.

And if you come to us for financial advice, we’ll review a wide range of products, services and providers across the market – not just our own. From there, we’ll recommend the solution that we believe will best work for you – whether that’s an Investec service or not.

  • Do I need the help of a financial planner if I'm already retired?

We firmly believe that financial planning in retirement is equally as important as it is for retirement. With life expectancy increasing, what you have saved up by the time you stop working may have to last you a little bit longer. It’s vital that you’re in a position to enjoy your retirement to the full, and sound financial advice can help you make the most of your later years.

  • Do you have financial advisers near me?

We know the value of being local to you. We are proud to have a presence in 15 offices across the United Kingdom and Channel Islands, from Exeter to Edinburgh.

How can I make wealth management work for me?

Wealth planning and management means you can allow your finances to support your life goals. Whether that be preparing for retirement, providing for your loved ones or making your money more tax-efficient, our wealth planning services can help you realise your ambitions.
