We talked to James Clutton, director of opera at Opera Holland Park, about Mozart's sparkling comedy.

Mozart classic

'Mozart’s Neapolitan comedy is a summer evening classic. There is slapstick, romance, sublime music and poignancy as two sets of young lovers learn a little more about real life and each other.'

Cast from strength

'Here, as in the rest of the season, it was a question of finding a perfectly balanced cast. I’m pleased to say that we have achieved exactly that: Eleanor Dennis, Kitty Whately, Nick Pritchard and Nicholas Lester are graduates of some of the the most prestigious early career training programmes, including the ENO Harewood, BBC New Generation, State Opera of South Australia and OHP Young Artists schemes. Sarah Tynan has had huge success with OHP, ENO, WNO and Scottish Opera, and Peter Coleman Wright is a veteran of international houses from New York to Milan.

What gives the production real pep is the way that our director Oliver Platt and conductor Dane Lam bring eighteenth century Naples to life in their work with the OHP chorus. It’s a busy, sexy, cosmopolitan city of hustlers, aristocrats, dandies, soldiers, musicians and merchants..'

Così fan tutte, by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • Act 1

We are in 18thcentury sunny Naples. Starry-eyed soldiers Guglielmo and Ferrando make a bet with their grumpy friend Alfonso that their girlfriends, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are incapable of infidelity.

Alfonso maintains that ‘all women are like that’ (that’s what ‘così fan tutte’ means) and figures he can make a quick buck out of his friends’ naivety. So, he arranges for the lads to be apparently sent off to war, then has them dress up as a pair of Albanians and make overtures to each other’s girl. The overtures are unsuccessful.

  • Act 2

Under prompting from their maid, Despina, the sisters decide they might as well have some fun while the chaps are away gallivanting at this war lark. Within about five minutes things get out of hand and they fall in love and agree to marry the supposed Albanians. Their boyfriends then arrive home (the war would appear to have lasted less than a day), accept the girls’ somewhat embarrassed apologies, and marry them anyway, presumably in the original configurations, though this is not made entirely clear.

  • Fancy that!

The 19th century was so outraged by these slurs on the morals of womankind that a German translation had Despina letting the girls in on the deception (despite the fact that she doesn’t recognise the boyfriends in fancy dress any more than her mistresses do).
