We talked to James Clutton, director of opera at Opera Holland Park, about Verdi's most famous opera.

Classic with a twist

'When we approach works as well loved as La traviata our ideal is ‘classic with a twist’. Detailed character work from Rodula Gaitanou, exquisite designs by Cordelia Chisholm and vivid choreography by Steve Elias propel the tragedy of the courtesan Violetta Valéry and her lover Alfredo Germont into the glamour and hedonism of 1890s Paris.'

Young talent

'The pathos comes from the orchestra pit, where the conductor and former OHP Young Artist Matthew Kofi Waldren has created something as serious as it is stylish with the players of the City of London Sinfonia.'

Cast from strength

'We have cast from strength, even in the smaller roles, and are particularly proud of our Violetta, Australian soprano Lauren Fagan, who has made a sensational role debut. The plaudits she and the rest of the team have enjoyed in the press are richly deserved.'

A brief summary of La traviata

  • Act 1

Alfredo, a nice young man up in Paris from Provence, finds himself at a posh sex-party where he develops a violent crush on hostess Violetta, a top-dollar call-girl with weak lungs, and persuades her to fall in love with him.

  • Act 2

Violetta quits the night job and moves in with Alfredo outside Paris in bucolic bliss for a while, and what’s more, paying the bills (without Alfredo’s knowledge). It all goes downhill when Alfredo’s old dad finds out, pays a visit and asks Violetta to vacate the scene before her reputation messes up his daughter’s chances of an advantageous marriage. Violetta helpfully complies, and quickly calls her ex to squire her to a party that evening.

  • Act 3

Weeks later, Violetta’s lungs have finally packed up and she is dying. The ex is nowhere to be seen. Alfredo, who has finally got up to speed with things, shows up. Too late! She dies.

  • Fancy that!

La traviata, or ‘the fallen woman’, was Verdi’s only opera on a contemporary subject, and scandalised the authorities before it premiered in 1853. It’s based on the life of Marie Duplessis, the Parisian prostitute with whom the novelist and playwright Alexandre Dumas fell in love.
