Being a responsible business
Our commitment to be a responsible business stems from our purpose in society. It is core to our business . Thinking, acting and investing for everyone’s tomorrow not only shapes what we do but how we do it.
It is woven throughout our business strategy, recognising that this approach is core to our day-to-day decision-making. This focus on the long term is how we will not only create value for our clients but also make a wider contribution to society.
The firm’s stakeholders are our clients, our people, our shareholders, our communities, regulators and partners. Our aim is to maintain an open and transparent approach to stakeholder engagement based on building constructive relationships with our key stakeholders and ensure there is a two-way dialogue.
As a wealth manager, we are responsible for investing on our clients' behalf to help them try to achieve their long-term goals and aspirations.
We also recognise that the environment, society and financial stability are intertwined, and believe in our responsibility to contribute to the transition to a net zero economy. With this in mind, we believe it’s in the best interests of our clients that the companies and economies we invest in adopt best practices in managing environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks.
By addressing ESG issues, a responsible investment approach not only serves to protect the planet and people, but also preserves wealth and generates returns via enhanced risk management opportunity identification.
With responsible investment, building a sustainable future and creating value go hand in hand.
Our approach is aligned to the Rathbones Group Plc four pillars of responsible investing:
We consider ESG factors in the evaluation of investments to help identify ESG opportunities and risks.
Voting with purpose
We actively vote in a manner that allows us to focus our resources where we believe we can make the most difference.
Engagement with consequences
We prioritise engagement where we can help make a difference in addressing systemic ESG challenges.
We are committed to being transparent about our approach to responsible investment.
UK Stewardship Code
We were successful in our application to remain signatories to the Financial Reporting Council’s revised UK Stewardship Code, which sets standards for investing on behalf of UK savers and pensioners.
We have published our full-year disclosure of Stewardship activity, including a summary of our engagement and policy work. This also demonstrates our commitment to being active owners and signifies our support for the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) to which we are signatories, active ownership being a key UN PRI priority.
We're proud to support a number of initiatives to advance sustainability.
UN Principles of Responsible Investment (UN PRI)
We are a signatory of the UN PRI. Our membership commits IW&I globally to the UN PRI. We also submitted our inaugural annual PRI report in 2021 and publicly committed to making these reports available on an annual basis.
Climate Action 100+
Climate Action 100+ is an investor-led initiative to ensure the world’s largest corporate greenhouse gas emitters take necessary action on climate change
UK Stewardship Code
The code sets high stewardship standards for those investing money on behalf of UK savers and pensioners, and those that support them. Stewardship is the responsible allocation, management and oversight of capital to create long-term value for clients and beneficiaries leading to sustainable benefits for the economy, the environment and society.
The University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership
A global network of pension funds, insurers and asset managers on a mission to advance the practice of responsible investment. Our executive team, Investment & Research Office and a range of client-facing staff have also completed specialised training with the institute on sustainable finance.
Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change
The IIGCC’s mission is to support and enable the investment community in driving significant and real progress by 2030 towards a net zero and resilient future. This will be achieved through capital allocation decisions, stewardship and successful engagement with companies, policy makers and fellow investors.
CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project)
The objective of the CDP investor signatory membership is to promote industrial-scale environmental disclosure and engagement, aligned with the TCFD. We joined the CDP Non-Disclosure Campaign giving us the opportunity to actively engage companies that have received the CDP disclosure request on behalf of investors but have not yet provided a response.
