About me
I am a member of our Global Investment Strategy Group and of the Asset Allocation Committee for the UK arm of the business. I remain heavily involved in our security selection for real estate and infrastructure. I'm also a member of our Corporate Governance Groups for both equities and investment companies and am responsible for our relationships with external research suppliers. I provide advice to portfolio managers and their clients on appropriate benchmarks and asset allocation ranges to help meet their needs.
Background/Experience
I joined the City directly after graduating from Cambridge University in 1974 and have worked in the asset management industry ever since.
The first 21 years of my career were spent in the institutional fund management world, before I moved to apply my knowledge in the wealth management segment by becoming Chief Investment Officer of what is now Investec Wealth & Investment (then called Carr Sheppards) in 1995. I developed the firm's initial approach to Asset Allocation and led the expansion of our internal Research team. Subsequently I oversaw the widening of our scope to encompass the areas of real estate and infrastructure investment. I have been a director in recent years of two listed investment companies and the trade body the Association of Investment Companies.
For more than 15 years I was a member of the Investment Committee of my old Cambridge College and currently serve on the Investment Committee for University College London. I have been a member of the Advisory Committee of the Charities Property Fund, the £1bn+ Common Investment Fund managed by Savills, ever since the fund’s formation in 2000.
I have been an equity analyst on both capital goods and consumer sectors as well as involved in coverage of corporate bonds. I have managed portfolios for both long term pension schemes and charity clients, as well as high performance equity unit trusts. For over 40yrs, I have presented to external audiences and written newsletters on the outlook for economic growth and investment markets.
My interests
Outside work, I find time to enjoy Bridge, cooking, wine and sport (these days mostly watching rather than participating). I also collect antiquarian dictionaries to fulfil my interest in the history and use of language.
