My particular research covers European and UK equity third party managers and, as with all regions, the intention is to identify best in class fund managers that can deliver exceptional risk-adjusted returns over the long term. We place a lot of emphasis on qualitative research and that involves meeting fund managers and gleaning information that cannot be learnt from readily available performance data, factsheets or presentations. Meeting fund managers who operate with different philosophies is one of the fascinating parts of the job as they typically exhibit very different viewpoints on the outlooks for individual stocks and industries. We aim to provide our clients with a range of different and complementary investment strategies, covering different investment styles and market cap exposures. Comparing, contrasting and making relative assessments on funds is a key part of my day to day role.
I joined Investec Wealth & Investment in 2022 as a Research Analyst within the fund research team and am responsible for covering European and UK equity third party fund managers. Previously I was a Senior Analyst at Momentum Global Investment Management, where I worked since 2018 with fund research and portfolio management responsibilities. Prior to Momentum, I worked at a research consultancy called Asset Intelligence Research from 2014. I have an undergraduate degree in Mathematics with Economics, a master’s degree in Financial Economics and am also a CFA charterholder.
Meeting a lot of different fund managers, some who have performed very well and others who have performed very poorly, has helped me to learn the positive attributes to look out for that can help set up a manager for success and those to look out for that might point to more challenging returns moving forwards. Every fund manager is different, there isn’t one correct approach to picking stocks, and some are excellent sales people too, so as fund analysts, having a framework to highlight what you like, and don’t like, to see is very important in making a fundamental assessment of a manager. The only way to know if you own a best in class fund manager is by meeting others. That takes time and having a team that is solely focused on fund research without other distractions is very important.
Outside of work, I'm into my sport and fitness. Golf is the preferred sporting choice and I’m always searching for the key to unlock a better swing. I also enjoy visiting new countries and try to make the most of annual leave with new adventures and experiences.
