We talked to James Clutton, director of opera at Opera Holland Park, about Verdi's most famous opera.
Classic with a twist
'When we approach works as well loved as La traviata our ideal is ‘classic with a twist’. Detailed character work from Rodula Gaitanou, exquisite designs by Cordelia Chisholm and vivid choreography by Steve Elias propel the tragedy of the courtesan Violetta Valéry and her lover Alfredo Germont into the glamour and hedonism of 1890s Paris.'Young talent
'The pathos comes from the orchestra pit, where the conductor and former OHP Young Artist Matthew Kofi Waldren has created something as serious as it is stylish with the players of the City of London Sinfonia.'Cast from strength
'We have cast from strength, even in the smaller roles, and are particularly proud of our Violetta, Australian soprano Lauren Fagan, who has made a sensational role debut. The plaudits she and the rest of the team have enjoyed in the press are richly deserved.'Lauren Fagan as Violetta and Nicholas Garrett as Barone Douphol, one of Violetta's paid lovers
