Reviewing last year’s prize money Anchor Comprehensive School, 2015 league winners, used their R90 000 to procure a range of much needed goods such as a new motor for the school’s main gate; new urn and microwave for the school kitchen; palisade school fencing and burglar bars for various classrooms; an automatic washing machine as well as some soccer boots for a selection of well deserving players. Schools who claimed the remaining three spots spent most of their winnings on sports-related equipment and facilities.

Today, however, marked a fresh final four, and with the added incentive of soccer stars Brian Baloyi and Jimmy Tau looking on from the UJ athletics track surrounding the main soccer field, the boys were bound to bring their A-game.

The final four schools consisted of Thulani Secondary School; Moletsane Secondary School; Kwamahlobo Secondary School and Dr Beyers Naude Secondary School. The semi-finals saw a 1-all draw after regulation time between Thulani Secondary School and Moletsane Secondary School, with Thulani then claiming the win on penalties 4-3. In a similar vein, but with no goals after regulation time, Kwamahlobo Secondary School and Dr Beyers Naude Secondary School concluded in a stalemate. Kwamahlobo Secondary School then took the win 4-2 on penalties, playing themselves into the final which kicked off at 13h00.

The final was a closely contested affair with Kwamahlobo leading 1 – 0. Thulani Secondary School refused to give up and showed the determination and vision that is synonymous with the Investec Soccer League, scoring two hard earned goals and were deservedly crowned the 2016 Investec Soccer League champions.

Investec head of CSI, Setlogane Manchidi concluded:

"As always, a great conclusion to what was a fierce contest, with these teams giving their all. It’s amazing the pride with which all participating learners represent their school, playing not only for entertainment but showcasing their talents for a greater cause – their own schools that are to benefit from the prizemoney. We look forward to engaging with the winning schools to explore how best to spend their winnings from 2016 Investec Soccer League season."
