Though we’re starting to see the restoration of normality, and the investment management team has returned to the office in George Square, Glasgow, there is no doubt that the pandemic has had, and will continue to have, a meaningful effect on how we work, live, and play.

That feeling of change is not new to Glasgow. Our city has a long history of reinventing itself. From its beginnings as a small rural settlement on the River Clyde, through the part it played in transatlantic trade and the industrial revolution, to the thriving cultural mecca that we see today, the city has been at the forefront of the type of industrial and technological change that has gone far beyond its boundaries and right across the globe.

During Investec’s long presence in the city, we’ve seen it flourish. Glasgow is now a global leader in innovative industries such as precision medicine, quantum technologies, and advanced manufacturing. It has a thriving educational sector, has been recognised as one of the UK’s fastest-growing tech investment hubs, and is moving up the ranks as a UK digital infrastructure leader. It has a highly skilled workforce, a robust business base, and modern infrastructure.

Glasgow City Council plans to build on that through their proposed new Glasgow Economic Strategy which aims to enhance productivity, tackle the climate emergency, and promote inclusive growth. It has some ambitious aims including:

  • Constructing a Glasgow Metro to connect communities across the city and city region via modern and sustainable transport
  • Building on the successful hosting of COP26 to develop international partnerships and strengthen its position as a sustainability leader and global events destination
  • Investing into the Clyde, to reinvent the river as an engine of sustainable and inclusive growth for Glasgow and beyond.

So, as ever, Glasgow will continue to change and to reinvent itself.

What won’t change is our belief that, in this dynamic and transformative world, a local and dependable presence is crucial to building meaningful financial relationships. Our long history, local knowledge, and love for this city are all crucial to providing an outstanding service for individuals and businesses based here.

If you share that belief, please do get in touch.
