A sense of safety | When foundations shift

Kate Robson | Head of Investec My Investments

Over the past few months, I’ve been thinking a lot about foundations – what they mean in life and what they mean when planning for our financial future.

This reflection has been deeply personal for me, I recently lost a very close family member who played a foundational role in many aspects of my life. His passing shifted something fundamental in me. It changed how I think about the future and how I think about planning. It made me realise something important:

When your foundation is strong, you operate from a place of safety. When it shifts, everything feels different.

When stability changes, so does perspective

This year has brought uncertainty for many of us – global tensions, rising costs and unexpected events. Within my own family, there have been reminders of how quickly circumstances can change.

For someone who is organised, and prioritises planning and structure, these shifts have been unsettling. But they have also been helpful in exposing how we often think about our financial plans.

When thinking about our financial planning we often spend most of time and energy focused on the future:

  • When will I retire?
  • How much do I need?
  • What do I want my life to look like later?

These are important questions. But they rely on one assumption: that the foundation remains intact.

What happens if it doesn’t?

What if:

  • You can’t work for a period of time?
  • Your income stops earlier than planned?
  • An unexpected event changes and impacts your ability to earn?

These are not easy questions. But they are necessary.

Because your income is your most valuable asset. It funds your lifestyle, your children’s education and your long-term goals. Without protecting it, even the best long-term plan can unravel.

Building a solid financial foundation

When I think about creating a solid foundation, three building blocks stand out:

1. Planned expenses

Some costs are predictable:

  • School fees
  • Property maintenance
  • Lifestyle commitments

With two children in high school, this feels very real. Clarity comes from asking:

  • What do I need to fund?
  • Over what time period?
  • What should I set aside today?

Preparation reduces pressure later.

2. Loss of income

This is where many plans are vulnerable.

We plan as if we will work continuously until retirement. But what if that’s not the case?

Protecting your ability to earn includes Income protection

3. Unplanned expenses

Life rarely gives notice.

Medical events, emergencies or major disruptions can force difficult decisions – especially if there is no buffer in place.

Without protection or accessible reserves, investors may need to access retirement savings, sell long-term investments prematurely and or take on avoidable debt.

Thinking about loss of income and unplanned events aren’t pessimistic. They’re practical. They ensure that if circumstances change, your family’s way of life doesn’t have to.

Why foundations matter

When your financial base is fragile, short-term pressures force you to compromise. When your foundation is strong, something powerful happens. You create space. To think clearly. To act rationally, and to stay invested. Much like in life, when we feel safe and supported, we make better decisions. The same applies financially.

The ability to build

A stronger foundation allows you to build higher. When risks are managed and short-term needs are protected, you are free to focus on growth which includes long-term investing, wealth creation and legacy planning. Ensuring your plan has resilience built into is as key as diversification.

This period has reinforced something deeply for me: Foundations are not just about finances, they are about creating a sense of safety. And that sense of safety changes everything. It allows us to move forward with confidence, even when life feels uncertain. It ensures that when storms come – and they always do – we are not starting from scratch.

Instead, we have something solid to stand on.
