A cybersecurity and financial fraud deep dive

With cybercrime expanding at an unprecedented pace, the threat landscape is evolving fast. Fraud is no longer just technical, it’s personal, psychological and increasingly difficult to detect.

As part of the Investec In conversation series, we hosted a national roadshow, Fraud: Timeless tricks exposed, bringing together cybersecurity experts, clients and thought leaders to unpack the current fraud and cyber threat environment.

Held across key South African cities and streamed online, the event focused on raising awareness, sharing real-world case studies and empowering individuals and businesses to stay ahead of fraudsters.

Key themes and takeaways

Cyber threats are human, not just technical
  • Fraudsters rely on social engineering, fake documents and urgency to bypass logic and gain trust
Scams evolve, but the red flags are timeless
  • Unsolicited offers, fake websites, deepfakes and email spoofing are all on the rise and increasingly convincing
Tools matter – but habits matter more
  • Many fraud cases are preventable through digital hygiene: strong passwords, Two-factor authentication (2FA), verified domains and direct communication with your banker
Proactivity is the best defence
  • Clients were urged to use features like device registration, transaction limits, fraud blocks and Investec’s Private Vault for document storage
Fraud is a partnership risk
  • Staying protected requires constant awareness, from both clients and institutions
