Money Diaries: Rugby trio talk financial tactics
Investec helps individuals and businesses achieve their goals. As title sponsor of the Investec Champions Cup, here we ask three leading rugby players to share their attitude to money management.
Our trio of England internationals are Saracen’s fly-half Alex Goode, his opposite number at Sale Sharks, George Ford, and Alex Mitchell, scrum half at Northampton Saints.
1. Alex Goode, Fly-half, Saracens
Saracens’ fly-half Alex Goode has represented England at junior and senior levels. As he prepares for life off the field, he recognises the importance of sound financial planning for a more secure post-rugby future.
How would you describe your relationship with money?
“I've always been pretty money conscious. In rugby, you can potentially earn money at a young age, so I’ve tried to invest wisely, whether that’s through property, savings or stocks and shares. I’ve tried to aim for variety and to have something for that rainy day.
The next stage of my life will be different and, hopefully, I can make a success out of myself. But I’m ready as much as you can be with my money, to put it somewhere and organise it.”
2. Alex Mitchell, Scrum-half, Northampton Saints
Alex Mitchell is a scrum half at Northampton Saints and has represented England at junior and senior levels. His financial focus is on education and insight.
2. How prepared for the future are you?
“It would be silly not to think about the future. I do try and prepare financially – it's always something I've looked to. I was doing a degree in maths and economics, and I’ve got a financial adviser. I know a few guys who go down the route of buying properties and stuff, but I've gone down the route of saving up and investing for the future.
Life is not just about money though. Every time I have a week off, I try to travel, because you’ve got to enjoy yourself as well.”
3. George Ford, Fly-half, Sale Sharks
George Ford plays fly-half at Sale Sharks and has represented England at junior and senior levels. He believes in building a diverse investment portfolio.
3. How have you diversified your career and income?
“I've got a couple of hospitality businesses – one café and one restaurant (George opened Kobe Coffee with his brother Joe in 2020). I’ve invested in that side of things. At the same time, I’ve invested in commercial property too, which provides a bit of a steady income.
I’d describe my relationship with money as being quite sensible. I like to try and make sure I've got a diverse portfolio when it comes to investments. And I try not to spend too erratically, either.”
