How can an individual benefit from private banking?
Lucy: It’s not uncommon for individuals to find they’ve simply outgrown their bank. When juggling a fast-paced career and an equally busy personal life, they need a private banker who is highly responsive to save them time.
When buying a home or investment property, traveling internationally, or building a legacy for their children, they also want financial solutions that are flexible and allow them to continue building their wealth.
Many of my clients found themselves in this situation before coming to Investec, because their finances had become more complex over time. Working in corporate professions, they often had multiple income streams including a salary, discretionary bonus or profit shares.
We can help with specific needs or work more holistically. There is no requirement to hold assets under management with us.
What support is available for entrepreneurs?
Lucy: Many entrepreneurs invest heavily in their own business and have relatively low personal liquidity. By looking at their financial position overall we can often help them unlock the value of their wealth to spend, save and invest appropriately.
We’re comfortable working with sophisticated business structures and advisors, and will consider dividends and foreign currency in lending decisions.
What services are your clients most looking for at Investec?
Lucy: We connect our clients to several in-house specialists. For example, our lending experts help us tailor mortgages, while our foreign exchange dealers help manage currency exposure over time.
In addition, our in-house corporate banking team provide client businesses with fundraising, cash management and advisory support; or clients can seek financial planning and investment management support from our experts at Rathbones Group.
One of the benefits our clients value the most is having a personal contact who understands their world. At Investec, the strength of the relationships we build with our clients lies in our willingness to go further. Each private banker has a relatively small number of clients so we can dedicate more time and attention to their needs.

How is your approach to mortgages different?
Lucy: We look at every client’s financial position holistically to find the right solution for them. This includes considering multiple income sources and discretionary, deferred and foreign currency earnings when assessing affordability.
Clients may also be able to make repayments at the most convenient times to support their cash flow, such as when they receive their bonus or vesting shares. Where appropriate, we can offer higher LTV loans, interest-only mortgages, or a secured revolving mortgage facility, to enhance their access to capital and cash flow support.
We know that moving swiftly can be the difference between securing or missing out on a great property so we’re nimble and can make decisions at speed.
What kind of savings needs can you support?
Lucy: Our clients often want to preserve some level of access to their cash so they can seize opportunities.
We offer two types of private bank deposit accounts that could meet the needs of high-net-worth individuals. The Voyage Reserve account, and the 3-Month Reserve account. These accounts enable our clients to earn interest on balances up to £1 million and additional interest on balances of more than £1 million. Withdrawals can be made with one or three-months’ notice.
How easy is it to change your private bank?
Lucy: Changing your bank shouldn’t have to be hard work. We always work with our clients to help make the process as smooth as possible.
With the industry-wide Current Account Switching Service (CASS), which most banks and building societies are signed up to, it’s free to change your account over to a new provider. And, even if our client’s previous bank isn’t a CASS member, they may be able to transfer using Investec’s Switching Service. This allows them to transfer their account and regular payments, including direct debits and standing orders, in just 12 working days.
