What is international banking?

International banking is a suite of banking, foreign exchange, savings and investment solutions designed to help you manage your money across countries and currencies. It can include holding and spending foreign currency, banking offshore, making international payments, moving money across borders and investing globally.

For clients whose financial lives extend beyond South Africa, these capabilities can be brought together through one connected banking relationship, supported by specialists who understand both local and international needs.
 

What is the difference between an offshore bank account and a foreign currency account?

The main difference is where your money is held.

An offshore bank account is held in another country or jurisdiction. A foreign currency account lets you hold money in currencies such as US dollars, British pounds or euros through a South African bank.

For example, Investec’s UK Private Bank Account is held in the UK, while its Foreign Currency Call Account is held through Investec South Africa. The right option depends on where you need your money to be held and how you plan to use it.
 

How do international payments work?

When you make an international payment, funds are sent from your account to a beneficiary in another country, with currency converted where necessary.

You’ll generally need the beneficiary’s banking details, including their account information and the receiving bank’s SWIFT or BIC code. For payments from South Africa, you’ll also need to provide the reason for the transaction for Balance of Payments reporting. Exchange rates, bank charges and processing times can vary depending on the currency, destination and banks involved.

How much money can I transfer offshore from South Africa?

From 2026, South African residents aged 18 and older can generally transfer up to R2 million per calendar year under the Single Discretionary Allowance without obtaining a SARS Tax Compliance Status PIN for an Approved International Transfer.

You can also transfer up to R10 million per calendar year under the Foreign Investment Allowance, provided you meet the relevant tax-compliance requirements and obtain SARS approval.

Transfers above these limits may still be possible, but additional South African Reserve Bank approval and supporting documentation may be required.
 

Do I need SARS or South African Reserve Bank approval to move money offshore

Not for every transfer. The requirements depend on the amount you want to move, the purpose of the transfer and your circumstances.

Transfers within the R2 million annual Single Discretionary Allowance generally do not require a SARS Approved International Transfer PIN or separate SARB approval. Transfers under the R10 million Foreign Investment Allowance require the relevant SARS tax-compliance approval.

For amounts above R10 million, an additional application to the South African Reserve Bank is generally required through an Authorised Dealer such as your bank. Investec’s foreign exchange specialists can help you determine which requirements apply.
