THE CHALLENGE
When freight rates go up tenfold.
For a freight forwarder operating globally, COVID-19 proved pivotal. As shops closed and online sales surged, Supreme Freight's clients needed cargo moved urgently, and freight rates increased tenfold. This meant the funding required to keep pace had to arrive fast.
Brexit was the next challenge. Chris had been watching it closely and was determined to have a funding facility in place before the UK’s official exit took place. He expected Brexit to hurt the business — in the end it proved the opposite.
THE SOLUTION
A facility built to suit the business.
Supreme Freight was introduced to Investec in mid-2021. The immediate need was clear: a funding solution that could provide security and speed through an unpredictable environment. Investec put in place an invoice finance facility — giving Supreme Freight the ability to keep servicing its clients, chartering aircraft and fulfilling contracts as volumes continued to surge.
But what made the relationship work over time was not just the facility itself — it was a bespoke solution which also removed significant administrative burden from both sides. What could have been a friction point became a smooth solution built specifically for the business.
THE RELATIONSHIP
More than transactional, a way of thinking.
Nigel Phipps has managed Investec’s relationship with Supreme Freight since the beginning. He describes the approach as listening first — not replacing one facility with another, but understanding what was causing friction with previous financing arrangements, and navigating those obstacles.
We’ve always tried to be a low touch banking partner. We don’t want to be a burden on the team, but we’ve also tried to find solutions to problems. Where there have been issues along the way, we’ve sat down, helped to work them out, and been flexible to find a decisive way forward.
