Money Diaries: George Ford
Sale Sharks fly-half George Ford balances his club appearances with a 14-year-strong England international career and life at the helm of several entrepreneurial business ventures. Here, Investec asked him to share his thoughts on money and his financial goals in a quickfire Q&A.
1. How would you describe your relationship with money?
“I’d describe my relationship as being quite sensible. I like to try and make sure I've got a diverse portfolio when it comes to investments. And I try not to spend too erratically, either.”
2. Do you have a savings goal?
“No, I don't have a savings goal. I'm very keen to make sure, that I’m investing sensibly. But I am also spending a little bit more freely, while I am earning a decent salary. I want to make sure that even when I do retire, I’m in a good position.”
It’s important to make sure you get your ducks in a row outside of what you do.
3. Do you think about your financial future?
“Yes, I do. I think it’s important to make sure you get your ducks in a row outside of what you do, which for me, obviously, is playing rugby. I think about it a lot – and hopefully I try to make sure I’m doing the right thing at the right time.”
4. What businesses and other investments are you involved in?
“I've got a couple of hospitality businesses – one café and one restaurant (George opened Kobe Coffee with his brother Joe in 2020). I’ve invested in that side of things. At the same time, I’ve invested in commercial property too, which provides a bit of a steady income.”
5. And finally, what would your dream home look like?
“My dream home? Nothing too big, but I'd like a really nice gym. And a place where I could put a nice sauna and an ice bath – obviously for my rugby and training.
“I’d like to have a bit of land as well – it would be great to have a couple of fields.”
